Mothers we love | Skye Rose

We chat to our long time friend and new mother, Skye Rose about birth, breastfeeding and motherhood

What is your babies name and how old is he?
Elden and he is 7 months

Can you describe yourself in a sentence
Kind, fun loving, a gentle nature.

What do you love most about motherhood?
The instant connection shared between mother and baby, it's like no other. I love seeing his character
and personality unfold and everyday learning a little bit more about him and the person he is becoming.

Tell us about your birth story..
I absolutely loved being pregnant and I am sure Elden enjoyed his time in there too as we were 9 days late.
I had been practising hypnobirthing leading up to the due date and had been hoping for a natural birth but as is
often the case, the birth didn't go to plan. Elden was born healthy and very alert via an emergency cesarean. It
is hard to suddenly have all your hopes and thoughts about birth change without any control over it at a time
when your not in control of much else, but all I wanted was for him to be safe and healthy and I trusted that my
midwife knew what was best for both of us at the time. I was very blessed to have Jack and my mum by my side
throughout the labour, they were so supportive and positive which helped me to stay calm.

Did you face any challenges when learning to breastfeed, how did you handle them?
I feel quite lucky, Elden fed for two hours straight after he was born and since then he can't get enough.
I have had a few times where I could feel my milk supply was running low but with the help of blessed thistle and feeding on
demand I managed tokeep my milk supply up. I hope I can continue feeding him until he is at least a year old.

You have gone back to work part time, how do you find juggling work and a baby?
Going back to work part time was daunting at first but I enjoy getting some me time away plus I love what I do,
being a hygienist my days and hours are quite flexible so I am fortunate in that regard. While I work Elden goes
to my mum, knowing that she is getting quality bonding time with her grandson makes it all the better and of
course it helps knowing that I don't need to worry about him.

You are vegetarian - has or will this affect what you feed Elden?
We have decided to let Elden choose if he would like to eat meat when he is old enough to understand
what he is eating. He has a well balanced diet and we ensure he is getting everything his growing body needs.

What advice would you share with mothers to be?
A mothers instinct is a force to reckon with, listen to what it is telling you. Most of all enjoy every moment with
your little treasure as they grow so fast.
